ADAMAWA STATE CONCLUDES A TWO-DAY REVIEW MEETING ON SIX-MONTH PAID MATERNITY LEAVE BILL

The Adamawa State Planning Commission, in collaboration with the UNICEF, successfully concluded a two-day stakeholders’ review meeting on the proposed Six-Month Paid Maternity Leave Bill for Adamawa State.

The meeting, which was held on Thursday, 4th and Friday, 5th June 2026, at Homtel Hotel and Derivatives, brought together representatives of government ministries, departments and agencies, development partners, healthcare professionals, labour unions, women groups, civil society organizations, and other critical stakeholders.

The review session provided a platform for participants to critically examine the provisions of the proposed Bill and make recommendations aimed at strengthening maternal and child health outcomes in the state. Deliberations focused on promoting exclusive breastfeeding, improving workplace support for nursing mothers, protecting the rights of women in employment, and enhancing child welfare.

Stakeholders commended the Adamawa State Government for initiating policies that prioritize the wellbeing of women and children, noting that the proposed legislation would significantly contribute to reducing infant and maternal health challenges while creating a more supportive environment for working mothers.

Speaking during the closing session, participants reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the successful passage and implementation of the Bill, describing it as a major step toward improving family welfare and advancing sustainable development in Adamawa State.

At the end of the meeting, a communiqué containing key recommendations was adopted and is expected to guide the finalization of the proposed legislation before its presentation to the appropriate authorities for further legislative action.

The Adamawa State Planning Commission and UNICEF reiterated their commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the realization of policies that promote the health, dignity, and economic wellbeing of women and children across the state.
